Women especially are guilty of this. We focus so much on the needs of others that we forget to take care of ourselves. Guys, of course, are guilty of this as well. The problem is, when you begin to focus on taking care of everyone else and forget to take care of yourself, everything suffers — including your marriage. You can fix that, however. How?
If the kids, work, and other responsibilities are taking their toll such that you don't have time for yourself (or your marriage or spouse), it's no surprise that the marriage relationship is going to suffer. If that happens, the first thing you probably think of is that you have to work on your marriage. Can be a mistake, though, because "working on your marriage" becomes just one more thing on your to do list. Instead, stop for a moment, and take a deep breath. It's time take care of yourself first.
How does taking care of yourself help your marriage?
When you stop and take a moment out of your day to take care of yourself, you're replenishing yourself so that you then have enough to "give back" to others. If you try to focus on "working on your marriage," you may just see it as one more thing to do, which will make you resentful and drained. However, if you focus on yourself first (for once) and do some personal caretaking, you'll have the energy to focus on your marriage afterward and give it the attention it needs.
Things you can do to take care of yourself
One of the things that can happen during an established marriage is that romance can go out of it. We forget that we romantic, loving beings, because were so focused on "getting things done." Taking care of yourself can help you get back in touch with those romantic feelings:
· Take time to sleep
Fatigue is a big killer of passion and romance. Many spouses (especially those with kids) shave the hours of sleep they get down to a minimum. When you want to do nothing more than sleep, the last thing you want to think of is a sexy night in with your partner. Do what it takes to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. If you've got a new baby in the house, you're not going to be able to do that right now, of course, but if the kids are older (or you don't have kids), make sleep a priority. Set a firm bed time and keep to it. (Even better, go to bed a little bit earlier than you need to on a regular basis so that once you're rested enough for intimacy again, you have the time and space to actually do it.)
· Take regular "me" time
Find a half an hour a day to relax, read a favorite book, take a bubble bath, or work out. Spend at least a half an hour day focusing on just yourself (even if you have kids) so that you can replenish. This, in turn, will give you the resources to continue to take care of others, and take care of your marriage, too.
